Brentford have reportedly tried to open contract talks with Yoane Wissa, hoping to keep our 19-goal forward at the Gtech. But with Bryan Mbeumo’s move to Manchester United confirmed yesterday, is the situation shifting more quickly than the club had envisaged?

And now, developments may be accelerating. A Newcastle United bid was reportedly made on Saturday for Wissa – £32 million plus £5 million in add-ons. My hunch is the bottom line number would probably need a 4 at the start of it to make it super-serious, however, Tottenham, and (less seriously) Nottingham Forest are also sniffing, with all the above able to offer European football and, maybe as crucially, a new challenge for the DR Congo international. Sources suggest he’s not interested in extending his current deal and could be ready for the next step in his career.

“There’s no shortage of admirers for Wissa, he’s shown he can deliver consistently, and now might be the right time to move.” BBC Sport

Earlier this summer, Brentford made it clear they had no intention of selling both Wissa and Mbeumo in the same window. But that was before Mbeumo’s exit became reality. Together, the duo not only formed one of the Premier League’s most underrated attacking partnerships, but also shared a close friendship off the pitch.

Wissa and Mbeumo weren’t just strike partners; they were neighbours and roommates, confidants, and often seen joking and supporting one another during training and away trips. That friendship was further demonstrated at the club’s Player Of The Year award event, where the duo’s stage interview underlined the partnership continued off the pitch. With Mbeumo now gone, it’s fair to ask whether Wissa has lost one more reason to stay.

“Their bond extended well beyond matchdays… you could see the joy they brought each other just by playing together.”The Athletic

At 28, Wissa’s current deal runs until summer 2026… one guaranteed year with the club holding an option for a further year… so, two years. Brentford aren’t under immediate pressure to sell, but this summer could represent the best chance to maximise value if Wissa is leaning toward a move.

But then comes the wider context. Brentford are already among the bookmakers’ favourites for relegation this season, undoubtedly reflecting the loss of key players, coaches, and backroom staff over the past few weeks. If Wissa follows Mbeumo out the door, does that grim prediction start to look more understandable? Or is it simply another example of pundits underestimating a club that has consistently punched above its weight and sees past the punters and pundits?

“Wissa’s preference is clear… he wants a new challenge, and Brentford may have to decide whether holding him makes sense for anyone.”Evening Standard

Should fans see another high-profile sale as a worrying step toward decline? Or is this Brentford once again making tough, calculated moves while a player’s stock is high, then moving on to an already identified new player?

“I would be tempted to cash in. He is at the height of his value and that is the model. As you say, the Mbuemo magic link is gone. Love Wissa, but if they get £50m ish, I’d sell” JimmyMac via Beesotted

That’s the real debate. Would selling Wissa now feed the narrative that Brentford are slipping toward inevitable relegation or is that narrative flawed to begin with? It’s been a huge summer of change so far.
