Yet another good piece and a single voice relating to at least 2,000 or more fans opinions after yesterday’s outing but and its a big but, having had time to weigh it all up, to work it all out, to wonder what ‘went wrong’, I have an overwhelming strange feeling of, “am I really as upset as I should be” or “is it really as bad as a lot of people were making out” yesterday?
I have absolutely loved this season & thoroughly enjoyed last year too. From the choosing of Adidas as our kit supplier, our new kit, our new more professional outlook, an organised Brentford, a structure, quality ticketing, better press office, better facilities, a strong back room team, a quality management structure and all round 100% improvement. This is not a coincidence, far from it. This has been decided, been talked about, examples looked at, meetings called, decisions made and then we as fans see the outcomes. It has been absolutely brilliant to witness. We as fans are able to have, and I absolutely hate the word with a passion, but have ‘banter’ with other local clubs like Fulham & QPR on social media and not as the annoying little brother sort of type but on the same level. We had years of not being able to do so. It’s great, finally able to be a force, a driving force, with a much better future than those clubs who’s level we’ve stepped up on to. I can’t thank those who have been involved enough. I really can’t.
But back to yesterday, where we all travelled in hope that the weeks disruption were not going to have an effect on performance, well how naive we were. It was a woeful performance but one that was painfully likely to be the case. And so we lost, lost heavily, lost badly, lost without our new found pride and it hurt, you seen it in the fans behaviour, getting upset with stewards, shouting at players for misplaced passes, shouting at each other in disagreement, arguing amongst ourselves and that was always going to be the case but hold on, this as has been suggested above, is the first time since Stevenage, or maybe Middlesbrough but so what. Have we become that great a club and team that we are above all this. Can we not have an off day? It’s painfully obvious why we did but so what, big deal. Yes we travelled, but it was only over East London, I the prices weren’t as bad as Norwich or Leeds so so what, a day put ruined but no biggie. Not at all. It won’t diminish my overall enjoyment of this year and here’s why. I’m going to say it from a brutally honest opinion of mine but I DONT WANT TO GO UP. Not yet anyway, maybe even not next year or the year after that or until we’re all ready, everywhere. I have thoroughly enjoyed visiting new cities, new stadiums, seeing new teams, new experiences. We’re not up in The Championship for one year or one season only, we were safe or knew we would be by about end of Sept/early October so I started enjoyingi it all then.weve out sang, out played, out wanted it more, nearly every team up until yesterday but so what. Talking to a few people in he pub opposite the station yesterday before the game, I wasn’t the only one feeling that way. Hand on heart, a few of us admitted it that we didn’t want to be in the Premiership where money is everything. Screw us fans, screw when we’d be playing, screw Saturday afternoon 3pm kick offs, screw long journeys away on a Monday night, just money, money, money. Players, managers, tv, press, showbiz & us as a bit part player in it all.
We’ve been to lovely new grounds, seen better refereeing, not so much kick and rush football, better pitches, bigger crowds, better atmospheres and all round huge improvement. I am happy as Larry. I could quite easily enjoy this for another year or so. No more visits to Rochdale, Yeovil, Scunthorpe, Hartlepool for a bit but all the same, a nice enjoyable day out supporting a not too bad at all a team.
A few recent blogs and podcasts from Beesotted all focussed on the extortionate ÂŁ35/ÂŁ34 fee for an away game. Uproar, a sense of ‘they’re taking the micky’ attitude but be careful what we wish for, if we all who are up in arms about yesterday because we didn’t keep our promotion push up, actually got what we really wanted, then hello ÂŁ50/ÂŁ70 tickets to away games and possible anything over ÂŁ40 plus for home games. Playing home games at maybe Reading or Fulham because no matter what the club suggests, the creaking old ground we have loved for years in Griffin Park would be laughed at, scoffed at, humiliated by the big Chiefs sitting around the marble table at the plush surroundings of the premier league, so we’d be on our travels every week, home and away so let’s all just take stock. Take a straw poll. After 28 years of trying to get out of the lower 2 tiers of national football, who is actually really happy that we’re eating at the 2nd tier right now and have our feet firmly under the table and ordering our over indulgent dessert? I for one am.
This power struggle, if that’s what it is, goes on in pretty much all Premier League clubs year in, year out, season in, season out, manager in, manager out and do we really want to join the merry go round just yet? Not me.
It would have been a lovely enjoyable day out at Wembley in May if it were to happen, it still might. We could go with no fears of worries, like we used to when playing in the Johnstone Paints Trophy final or play offs, when always, without fail, out fears were realised when yet another Brentford team panicked on the big stage and lost our way but this time we could go with the idea of so what, if we didn’t go up, we’d be in the championship, the 2nd tier, again for another year and remember back about only 6 months ago, how many of us same fans who were going beserk yesterday, thought anything other than being in the bottom 3, would be a ‘successful’ season? So what’s changed?
Let’s see what’s said tomorrow, let’s see what the next instalment is, let’s see who’s going to be in charge of team affairs, but let’s also take stock that we are ahead of schedule, in a way better place than we all thought we would be and me for one, in a division that I am totally happy to be in for now at least anyway.
I look forward to another trip to Charlton again next year, if they stay up, but would it be that bad? Not for me it wouldn’t. Exeter, Torquay, Hereford, Stockport, numerous others aside, Charlton isn’t that bad at all.
Don’t forget to enjoy the most successful period of this club in decades, I think we all forgot to do so this past week and definitely at yesterday’s game we did. It’s all part of the ride. A weeks a long time in football, but 28 years got forgotten in one game yesterday afternoon. Weighing it all up, it was only a poor poor game and the excuses for which we are only too well aware but so what!! So what!!
Option 5 is the only real alternative. Brilliant as Warburton has been he is now a lame duck. This debacle has to be sorted asap.
Superb article and even better reply by Stephen….couldn’t disagree with either…well written.
As a Charlton supporter, I want to say I am surprised at the rumours over your managers future, not only has he done a very good job since taking over from Rosler but he also conducts himself with a lot of dignity.
He would be very welcome at the Valley if he was sacked!
Good luck to you guys it is refreshing to see Brentford and Bournemouth challenging for promotion hope you make it.
option 6 two managers next year as per Liverpool a few seasons ago.
have already tried to send this tweet three times already only opened the account yesterday my son calls me a techno retard if it appears more than once forgive me
