Brentford came away from Villa Park with well deserved point against one of the division’s bigger sides, however, the players will be frustrated at having to settle for a point after producing a very positive display.
There won’t be many of the 30,000 who witness the game at Villa Park who would have come away thinking the Bees weren’t worthy of the lion’s share of the spoils as, apart from the opening 10-15 minutes, and a short spell in the second period, Brentford tool the game to their hosts and created three clear cut chances – although we were left thanking Daniel Bentley for a last gasp one-on-one block towards the end to save the day.
Brentford’s three transfer day departures may have caused a few raised eyebrows, but the trio who came in to replace them did an excellent job, although the sight of Sergi Canos limping off midway through the first half after he’d tracked back to put in a tackle may see him sidelined again for some time – which will come as a blow.
Brentford’s noisy fans got behind their side throughout and it was telling how quiet the rest of the stadium was – and the Villa fans we spoke to after the match were honest enough to know that they’d been outplayed over all – and no matter how many caps and medals John Terry may have in his sideboard – the Bees’ team work and desire was clear for all to see. Week-in-week- out Bees fans know that’s the way we’ve been playing all season so far too – as you will see and hear for yourselves in the Beesotted video (link at top of the page) and hear on the Pride of West London post match Podcast recorded in and around Villa Park.
Josh Clarke will be kicking himself for not converting a great one-on-one with the Villa keeper, who also produced a great safe from Ollie Watkins as he was through on goal, and, on another day, John Egan’s knee would have prodded the ball home – but a second clean sheet on the bounce against Wolves and Villa shows that good work has been done in tightening things up at the back. We just now need to re-find those goals.
Coming away from Villa Park with a point can never be a bad result though, now we have to build on the last two games and prepare for the trip to Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday evening when the players will once again have to be at their best.
Come On You Bees!
