Scoring a critical, last-gasp, goal against your fierce local rivals and being part of the wave of elation that erupted in the Craven Cottage away section (again) was absolutely priceless, and having spent a chunk of Sunday afternoon watching the game back, the pride I felt about our excellent team and outstanding support was further amplified.
The Bees players really did underline their credentials as one of the best footballing sides in the division right now and Fulham, for all the hype and superlatives the media have heaped on them during their amazing unbeaten run, in Brentford, more than met their match. They should be delighted to earn a draw against a side that not only outplayed them for most of the game, but could/should have won the match had two game-changing decisions not been missed by the match officials.
Fulham didn’t play at their best because Brentford didn’t let them… to a man we pressed the Cottagers and forced them into mistakes, and in Ryan Woods, we had a player who bossed the midfield and looked the best player on the pitch by a country mile.
The spirit and sense of belief in the Brentford camp was there for all to see – with the game deep into injury time, and a goal down thanks to one of only a handful moments of quality from Fulham – there was no exodus on ‘away terrace’ or sulking from the boys in green… instead they dug deep and went at Fulham in waves, and that never-say-die mentality earned them their just reward.
Watching Dean Smith and the dug-out go potty was superb, and it shows the passion that runs deep through our club right now… but its the goal that’ss still on repeat… this season is not over yet!
Barbet swings in on last cross… Jozefzoon rises and heads the ball back across the face of the goal… Maupay is unmarked at the back stick… he heads it goal-ward into the ground as Bettinelli scrambles across… Incredible… “you cannot write this script”… Maupay in the last minute! COME ON YOU BEES!
