Neil Maupay has undoubtedly paid a big price on social media following his open goal miss at Cardiff on Saturday – the young French striker has been ridiculed for a gaff that won’t be easily forgotten by some – however, tonight’s game against Burton Albion offers the former St Etienne striker an ideal opportunity to put that all behind him and get back on the score sheet.
Some on Twitter were unbelievably ready to right the 21-year-old off, but from what we’ve seen to date that seems way too harsh on a player who is still acclimatizing to the Championship, and life in England, and who as already scored five goals in 16 matches, the majority of those from the sub’s bench.
Maupay isn’t the finished article, obviously, we should all know the Brentford formula by now – indentify exceptional potential, nurture and allow them to flourish and build the strength in depth of the squad… there is nothing, absolutely nothing, to suggest that a player who has represented France at every age level bar a full cap, can’t continue his education and turn into another Bees great.
One miss certainly doesn’t define the player, and I think anyone who has watched him play this season will recognize the tremendous work ethic and the way he battles for every ball… he’s certainly no quitter.
Griffin Park under the floodlights tonight is always special and I’m hoping the Bees faithful will rally around one of out own and show what a supportive bunch we are.
