Bees fans, ably supported by Toumani Diagouraga, turned out at Rotherham in decent numbers but saw little to have made the long journey worthwhile after watching their team fail against a very average Millers outfit.
A battle was always on the cards against a Neil Warnock side desperate for survival points, yet the spluttering Bees played right into their hands. Poor clearances led to both Millers goals, and less than clinical finishing at the other end, were at the core of the Bees’ problems on an afternoon to forget.
The home side, backed by fans that appealed for anything and everything, saw the game, and results elsewhere, swing their way, however, Dean Smith’s side really should have had enough about them to put them to the sword.
Despite all the Millers’ huff and puff, unchanged Brentford looked fairly comfortable in possession and passed the ball around confidently in phases, but it was a familiar story with a frustrating disconnect between the midfield and forward line – it was only with the introduction of Vibe and Hoffman, when the Bees started to get urgent in their attempts to salvage a point late-on, that Rotherham looked stretched.
Alan Judge had a dangerous free-kick saved by Lee Camp early on, but it was Rotherham who went ahead on the half-hour when Matt Derbyshire converted after Lee Frecklington crossed a part-cleared ball with Jake Bidwell caught out of position.
But Brentford were back on level terms just before the break with Alan Judge converting his saved penalty after Sergi Canos had been felled in the area. As you will hear in the Beesotted video (link above), hopes were high for the second period; however, it would prove to be another frustrating 45 minutes.
The Millers’ second, on 71 minutes, came from the boot of Danny Ward who did well to get the ball down and lash home one of several partially cleared corners, but still, the Bees had enough changes to have gained at least a point.
John Swift and Philipp Hofmann had goal-bound shots blocked within seconds of one another, then Lesse Vibe blasted straight at the keeper after being played through on goal by the big German.
But it wasn’t to be, and the away fans trudged out of the ground contemplating another three points that had slipped – not through being outclassed in any way, simply by not being clinical enough at the back, or when shooting at goal. Rortherham are towards the foot of the division for a reason, yet we didn’t have enough about us to win.
With matches against bottom team Charlton, then local rivals QPR, on the immediate horizon, Brentford have to up their game and be better prepared for the scraps to come.
