Excellent commentary as usual.
Living in Australia I am divorced from the hot house atmosphere that was so prevalent at Griffin Park yesterday, so, observing from a distance two things struck me as very pertinent to the events of yesterday.
– Only one person survived yesterday with their integrity intact – Mark Warburton.
– The instantaneous reaction of all the players in mobbing MW following the Gray, goal which showed the whole world how important MW is to the players.
If MW is indeed on the way out Benham may well find out the slope down is very slippery.
I think it’s important to remember that the initial Times article – and it’s use of the word ‘sack’ has warped the story from the outset. We don’t know the full facts but it is clear that Mark is not being sacked, more that his contract won’t be renewed. None of us know exactly why that is though. Warbs may have been tapped up by another club, or he may be angling for a move himself. The nature of how the story came out was terrible (and the club’s statement didn’t help at all) but we can’t lose sight of the fact that Benham has yet to put a foot wrong when it comes to Brentford. However this pans out, I don’t think he’s on the way to Vincent Tan-ville just yet.
What this whole sorry saga has done is drive a wedge between the two most influential men at Brentford FC over the last couple of years. That special, symbiotic and mutually respectful relationship is over. Supporters now have to make their own minds up which side of the divide they’re on. Judging from the chanting last night it appears the Manager is held in higher esteem than the Owner. To my mind Benham badly needs to come out and clarify the situation to the fans – if he doesn’t he’s looking more like Vincent Tan by the minute.
After all he has done for the club, any comparisons between Matthew Benham and Vincent Tan are distasteful at best. Although we may not agree with some of his handling of this situation, come on, show some respect.
Luis i couldn’t agree more with your remarks.
