Highly rated Brentford prospect, Zain Westbrook, impressed Coventry City coaches in a trial match for the Sky Blues at the Ricoh Arena – the highly rated midfielder, who made his first team debut at Fulham, was B team captain and player of the season last year and has continued to receive rave reviews this campaign.
Westbrook is out of contract this summer and appears to have been on a week’s trial with Mark Robins’ Coventry City – here’s what the Sky Blues’ development coach, Jason Fardon, has made of Westbrook.
“When you get triallists in you want them to do what Zain has done today and that’s grab the game by the scruff of the neck and shown all his qualities.”
“We will sit down on Thursday and see what Zain’s programme is. I think he’s in for the rest of the week anyway and he’s been in all last week, so it’s not like he just turned up today. He’s been waiting to come in for us to have a look and is definitely a good prospect.”
This situation highlights the constant problem Kevin O’Connor and Dean smith face of how to deal with our best young talent, and how to integrate them into the first team.
Brentford FC have a non-negotiable rule that stipulates that a certain number of B team players must feature in the first team every season, as well as a structured first team training and travelling program, however, it is always going to be difficult to find the balance between opportunity and ambition.

Bit of a shame as I assume he’ll be out the door. I guess the consensus is that they think there are better players in the current B squad than Zain.
My feeling is that players deemed good prospects should make the move from the B squad out on loan to get proper experience (If not into our A team). Tom Field and Zain himself did at lower league teams and didn’t quite make the grade so maybe they aren’t ready yet or aren’t quite as good as they need to be for us. For every rough diamond found I’m sure there will be a hatful that won’t make the grade
