With Brentford heading north this weekend to take on PNE, in what should be a really entertaining and keenly contested game, and with my history head on whilst putting the finishing touches to the Big Griffin Park book, I thought a little trip down memory lane would be of interest.
It is almost 82 years since Brentford and Preston North End met, unbelievably, twice within 24 hours on Christmas Day and Boxing Day of 1935, with the Bees doing ‘the double’ – 5-2 at Griffin Park and 4-2 at Deepdale.
On Christmas Day morning Brentford thrilled a crowd of 30,000 thanks to goals from Dave McCulloch (2), Billy Scott, Jack Holliday, Ernie Muttitt, with Harry Curtis’ team taking North End to the cleaners once again… Brentford legend Dai Hopkins becoming the first Bees player to score a hat-trick in the top flight.
