Brentford’s back-up goalkeeping situation has come under the spotlight in the build-up to Saturday’s match with Crewe Alexandra at Griffin Park. Liam O’Brien, who was brought in as much needed cover towards the start of the season when Richard Lee was unavailable due to his shoulder injury, but has yet to feature in the starting eleven, and Jack Bonham, who had a traumatic time between the sticks when he was drafted into the first team as a stand-in for David Button, will be seeking clarification from Uwe Rosler as to their short-term futures at the club.
O’Brien’s three-month contract expires on Friday – meaning the club has to consider extending that arrangement. The former QPR youngster was on the bench last Saturday for the Staines Town Cup match after Richard Lee was ruled out due to a niggle, but Uwe has to decide whether he can risk reducing his options in that department by letting O’Brien go.
Jack Bonham, who Rosler defended after a shaky few weeks, is thought to be lined up to go out on loan in order to gain invaluable first-team experience. There have been enquiries about the former Watford man from two non-League sides.
With Button and Lee fully fit, and in good form, the Bees needn’t worry too much, but as we saw in the early few weeks of the campaign, throw injury and/or suspensions into the mix, then the position could cause us problems and could cost us valuable points.
