Sky TV presenter resigns over Ched Evans position
TV presenter Charlie Webster has resigned as a patron of Sheffield Utd after the club allowed convicted rapist Ched Evans to train with them. Webster, a lifelong Sheffield United fan who presents on Sky Sports News with lifelong Bees fan Natalie Sawyer, told Newsnight that she was disappointed that “the club had no point acknowledged the extremity of his crime”.
Webster, who was sexually assaulted as a teenager, has been an outspoken critic of the football authorities who she believes have failed to show any sort of strong leadership with regards the Evans case.
She said “My decision is made on the fact that I don’t believe a convicted rapist should go back to a club that I am patron of and should go back into the community to represent the community.
“He’s not just going into a job, he’s bandied as a role model, we cheer him on as a role model and he’s influencing the next generation of young men who are currently still making their decisions on how to treat women and what sexual mutual consent is”
Over 150,000 people signed a petition using Sheffield Utd to not take the player back but Sheffield United said there would be no place for “mob culture” in making a decision.
