Brentford’s CEO, Mark Devlin, has issued a no nonsense explanation of the club’s stance and core values with regard to encouraging an atmosphere of inclusivity at the football club.
As part of a broader statement, which rightly congratulates Kick It Out on its 25th anniversary, Devlin spells out the following important message:
“Brentford is proud to represent every part of our diverse community and is one of the most inclusive and welcoming clubs in the country. I suspect there is only a tiny minority who would not share our view that we welcome and include anyone, regardless of their race, religion, gender or sexuality.”
And he goes on spell out a firm message for those people who do not feel the same.
“For those that don’t share these views, we will not compromise on our values: We don’t want you at Brentford if you can’t accept that or if you behave in a manner which is incompatible with these values.”
We fully support the CEO on this matter; however, the club has rightly been criticised in the past for a disjointed approach to diversity issues and how it has managed certain problems. What is now vital is that the club – the board, the players, the staff and the supporters – stand shoulder to shoulder and make Griffin Park a place that everyone can enjoy without fear or prejudice.
The club now need to follow up this message with a clear, and easy to understand, set of procedures that back up the words with actions.
