Brentford progressed to the third round of the Carabaooooo Cup after a routine, if slightly strained, 1-0 win. Julian Jeanvier scored the all important goal before the break in the narrow, but completely one-sided cup clash, where The Bees wracked up over 25 chances.
The all-important goal came five minutes before the break, and although Luke Daniels in the Bees’ goal had little to seriously worry him over the 90 minutes, a more potent team could have made the home side’s wastefulness pay.
On the plus side there were some solid performances by Dean Smith’s fringe players – Tom Field looked impressive, Josh Clarke had a good game, as did Josh McEachran – plus there was another start by Said Benrahma who caused The Robins problems all evening and Alan Judge who was involved in plenty of the action.
There was also an exciting cameo from Chiedozie Ogbene, who came on for Marcus Forss with 15 minutes to go, and looked a real handful – perhaps he may provide more of a danger against Nottingham Forest this weekend as Neil Maupay’s suspension concludes.
Fortunately The Robins, who did play some decent football in phases, couldn’t capitalise on the scraps that came their way and Dean Smith’s men look forward to the bigger teams entering the competition.
