BillytheBee and Dave Lane went all nautical in Peterborough as they attempted to get folk to pronounce the unpronounceable WWWWWDWWWWWW before Brentford’s attempt to maintain their incredible run against Darren Ferguson’s invincibles.

Brentford came away from London Rd with all three points after a hard fought but well deserved 3-1 win against one of the promotion favourites Peterborough. In reality, the score could have been 5 or 6 as they spurned a number of excellent chances to better their goal difference.

The Bees went into this game as red hot favourites to nab all three points. In the pubs and boats before the game, Posh fans were despondent. Citing their team’s lack of passion and inability to hold a lead as two main reasons why things were going wrong.

Others mentioned internal wrangling and bust ups including players getting suspended to free themselves up for the upcoming transfer window – conspiracy theorists were working overtime in Peterborough over the Xmas holidays.

One striker down after Lee Tomlin’s late yellow card in the Carlisle game him, Nicky Ajose was recalled from Swindon – just over a week after he scored against the Bees. And he tried to inject a bit of much needed energy into the Peterborough side.

The teams went into the game with almost polar opposite league records. Brentford’s read WWWWWDWWWWWW in the 12 matches before this encounter whereas Peterborough read DLLLLLWDWLLL. However, Posh weren’t laying down and as was to be expected, took the game to the Bees in the howling wind and rain.

In keeping in line with our recent away form, after holding off Peterborough’s early half-advances, it was Brentford who broke away in the 16th minute. Douglas putting a ball through to Saunders who was clumsily brought down by keeper Olejnik. The ref had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Forshaw stepped up and rifled the ball into the back of the net to put the Bees 1-0 up and send the 1001 fans in the away stand, who were really making their presence felt, into raptures.

The Bees could have gone two up as a Trotta pass to Donaldson was thumped against the post. Great build-up play by Trotta who’s close control is getting better and better as each game goes on.

With the Bees very much in control of the game, Posh came back with a equaliser from out of the blue. Payne shot hopefully from 30 yards. The ball looked like it was going to clear the bar before getting caught by the wind, dipping suddenly before bouncing on the line, hitting the underside of the bar and going in. Button just stood watching – so freakish was the goal.

But in true Bees fighting style, they bounced straight back. McCormack – who really has been a revelation in this full back role – laid the ball off to Trotta who played a lovely pass through to Saunders. With an eye on the goal, Sam scored a lovely curler to put the Bees ahead once again.

Posh 1 Brentford 2

Opportunities for Saunders, Trotta and Bidwell should have seen the Bees cruising but it was in the 2nd half where the game should have been out sight from the Posh. Donaldson was fouled by a Posh defender and Forshaw once again stepped up to take the penalty.

With a lone bob the builder guarding the knocked down London Road terrace behind the penalty goal, Forshaw stepped up but his weak kick was easily saved by Olejnik.

The game then got hard, fast and exciting. Posh were fighting for their lives. The Bees were defending for their lives. Both sides had chances to score. Diagouraga had come on for Douglas before half time – he looked to have a hamstring problem. Dallas came on for Saunders. And Logan came on for Reeves.

Dallas was looking lively down the wing and had a couple of chances to score blocked. However, he should have done better when put through 1-on-1 with the keeper – his shot well saved by Olejnik.

But the Bees has the final say as Dallas got down the wing deep in injury time, crossing the ball to Donaldson who buried it to send Bees fans absolutely rabid.

Diagouraga also had a marvellous opportunity to make it four when he was through on goal but skyed his shot. But the Bees fans didn’t care. We were still top of the league and 13 games unbeaten.

Posh 1 Brentford 3

It’s hard to be anything but positive and excited about this 2014 Brentford side. What we saw at the Preston game 5 matches ago has continued. The passion from the players is second to none. They know intimately how each other play which is really working to our benefit. And most excitingly, we’re not sitting back – we’re really going for it.

Darren Ferguson got the dreaded vote of confidence from chairman Darragh MacAnthony after the match. He then went on to tell the world that he was “One of the best managers in the club’s history” which basically seems to entitle him to get away with mediocre results.

The reality is Posh have the strongest side they have ever had in this division. They paid £1.5million for a striker – very rare for any team to pay that much for a player in Division 1. And he claimed that Posh’s stay in Division 1 would only be a 9 months long. They seem to have an unsettled camp with poor team spirit. No wonder the pressure is on.

Ferguson also claims that he should have beaten Brentford twice saying “I would be happy to play them in every one of our remaining games to be honest.”

Well here’s news for you Fergie. The song “Can we play you every week?” was actually made for you guys. We’ve taken 6 points off you and we may not have million pound strikers in our squad but there is a bond and togetherness and team spirit in our side that money can’t buy. We would be quite frankly be delighted if we could play you guys every week.

And while your top boy Tomlin was raving it up somewhere on New Years Eve, our much more disciplined team were chilling in a hotel somewhere focussing on how to take your team apart again the following afternoon.

So the second half of the season is upon us. This next four weeks will really define our season. As I type, rumours are flying around about Wigan coming in for Forshaw and possibly Saville. We can’t have another DJ Campbell situation – the sale of whom to Birmingham when Brentford were riding high in January saw our promotion run falter a few years back. Forshaw and McCormack are key players. When both of them came off against MK Dons we had our backs up against the wall to a certain extent.

But only time will tell. Less than three months ago, we dismissed a playoff place as cloud cuckoo. Now we’ve a fight to keep top spot. And Bees fans are enjoying every single moment.

And as more people like Darren Ferguson get wound up by our WWWWWDWWWWWWW rather than focussing on their own shortcomings, the better for us. We’ll let them worry about us. We’ll just worry about winning.

What a difference three months makes eh.

Keep smiling Bees fans
