The capture of Ben Mee last summer, on a free from Burnley, has to be one of the Premier League signings of the season. Pigeon-hold by many as a key component in Dysche-ball, and possibly regarded as past his prime, Mee has not only emerged as a real baller now the shackles have been removed, but has inspired all around him.
Strong in the air, fleet-footed for an old’en and calm and composed when under pressure, Mee has inspired and organised the Bees’ defence – without him it could be argued a top ten place would have been unlikely – and Brentford fans have recognised his qualities by voting him as their player of the season. And the awards keep coming as we announce that he has also been named as the Beesotted Global Player of the Year, pipping Ivan Toney and David Raya.Â
The voting further underlines the consistency of Mee and proves that experience at the top level really can take a lot of pressure off of a young team in times of trouble, especially when that player is as intelligent and forward thinking as Ben. Here’s to another season (at least) of Mee and Pinnock lock-outs at the back with Mark Flekken (more than likely) between the sticks showing that there is life beyond David Raya.
Following each match, Beesotted Global members have the chance to vote for their top three players, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and over the whole campaign, Dave ‘Tasmanian Bee’ Genford has kept the scores updated… here’s how it finished.
