Brentford recorded a memorable win at St Andrews on Wednesday night, a game that ended with a deserved 2-0 win against ‘ten times better’ Birmingham City.

Harlee Dean’s ill-thought out and disrespectful claptrap last week, where the former Bees defender claimed in an interview that his current squad was ten times better than the Bees squad that reached the play-off to the Premier League three years ago, had angered large swathes of supporters… and his waffle certainly came back to haunt Dean and Brum in style.

Loud renditions of some less than complimentary songs were sung throughout the evening by the Bees faithful, an evening that turned out to be one to forget for the trio of transfer deadline day defectors. Dean failed to get off the bench having been dropped… Jota, who was bullied out of the game, then subbed off within an hour, was a shadow of his former self, and poor Maxime Colin was stretchered off within 15 minutes (he’s a genuinely lovely bloke so we hope he’s ok).

The game was undoubtedly more important than simply getting one over on the three mercenaries though, and we witnessed another hugely professional, focused and flowing displays by Dean Smith’s charges. Birmingham’s aerial bombardment was difficult to cope with at times, Cheikh Ndoye in particular causing all kinds of problems, but the Bees looked a constant threat on the break. One worrying note was the sight of Dalsgaard hobbling off after being caught driving forwards.

After surviving a post shaking pile-driver in the first half, the real turning point came when Lasse Vibe, who had put in a great shift, was replaced by livewire Neil Maupay – the young French striker once again showing what he’s capable of given the right service. Maupay caused Brum a real headache … first by being brought down in the area for Ollie Watkins’ penalty opener… forcing a finger tipped save from Kuszczak moments later, then scoring himself with a classic poacher’s strike to clinch the win with four minutes remaining.

Dan Bentley then pulled off a superb save in added on time to put the icing on the cake and ensuring a clean sheet as well as a superb three-point haul.

Wednesday night’s win will go down as another proud night for Brentford Football Club – hats off to the fans who travelled and supported the team throughout, as well as the boys in red and white on the pitch, who all did the club proud.

The win also proved as a timely reminded that no single player, or three players for that matter, is/are bigger than our club… that our recruitment policy is ensuring that most, if not all, departing stars can be replaced and forgotten about, and if you’re stupid enough to disrespect our club after you’ve left, the Bees will swarm together and come back and sting you in the arse.
