Beesotted contributors The Gowler and Paul Kowalczyk (@BeesBreakdown) give us the tactical and statistical lowdown of Brentford’s win against Luton Town.
Thomas Frank stuck with a 4-3-3 and brought KLP, Pinnock, and Ajer back into the starting XI. Luton being a heavy crossing side may have factored into Frank’s backline of Reguilon, Collins, Pinnock, and Ajer. The midfield consisted of Damsgaard, Janelt, and Jensen with Nørgaard available off the bench. Keane Lewis-Potter, Wissa, and Mbeumo started as the front 3 with Toney not in the squad due to a hip injury.
Rob Edwards’ side had a few players return from injury, with Lokonga, Osho, and Mengi all sliding right into the starting XI. Luton’s 3-4-2-1 saw Burke, Mengi, and Osho along the backline. Kaboré, Lokonga, Barkley, and Doughtry comprised the midfield. Clark and Chong provided support for Morris up top.

Summary
The Bees created plenty of chances against Luton from a variety of ways. Brentford built out of the back, pressed high up the pitch, took advantage of set plays, and won second balls. Brentford executed their tactics almost flawlessly and earned another big 3 points against a relegation side.
The Bees overperformed their xG for only the 10th time this season, but this was Brentford’s best shooting performance of the season. They overperformed their xG by 1.9 and their xGOT was 5.06, which shows how clinical Brentford’s finishing was.
Jensen, who has struggled recently, got back on track with some beautiful passes to create good scoring opportunities. One beneficiary of this, Damsgaard, also had an excellent match defensively, recording 7 tackles and interceptions.
Since coming back from injury, Mbeumo has created a spark for Brentford. The Cameroonian international leads the squad with 9 goal creating actions this season. Although a skewed statistic with lots of other variables, Mbeumo’s xG+/- is +10.5, meaning when he’s on the pitch the Bees have created 10.5 more xG than they’ve allowed.
