Beesotted contributor Jacob ‘The Gowler’ Gowler (@BeesBreakdown) gives us the tactical and statistical lowdown of Brentford’s win against Ipswich Town.
Thomas Frank’s unchanged starting XI matched up with Kieran McKenna’s 4-2-3-1. Tuanzebe, O’Shea, Burgess, and Greaves started on the backline for the Tractor Boys. Morsy and Taylor made up the double pivot while Chaplin roamed ahead of them. Hutchinson and Enciso joined Delap up top.
McKenna’s squad still plagued with injuries saw Townsend, Kalvin Phillips, and Szmodics miss out. McKenna still had choices on the bench, including Jack Clarke, Cajuste, and George Hirst.

Brentford held on for their fourth win in a row. The Bees struggled to create as much without Ipswich pressing as high as they did in the reverse fixture. Ipswich ended with 23.22 passes per defensive action (PPDA) which suggest they were keen to drop into their mid and low block.
Brentford’s own high press forced Ipswich into launching it long, which routinely led to Brentford winning back possession high up the pitch. The high press even led to Palmer clearing the ball for a corner kick at one point.
The Bees created 1.41 xG with Kayode once again leading the squad with 6 shot-creating actions and 7 ball recoveries. Yarmoliuk also continued his good run of form with the most tackles plus interceptions.
