Beesotted contributors The Gowler and Paul Kowalczyk (@BeesBreakdown) give us the tactical and statistical lowdown of Brentford’s loss against Everton.

Thomas Frank stuck with a 4-3-3 with Reguilon, Pinnock, Collins, and Ajer on the backline. Damsgaard joined Nørgaard and Janelt in midfield after Jensen picked up a minor injury in training. Keane Lewis-Potter replaced Wissa in the front 3 to join Mbeumo and Toney leading the line.

Marco Silva chose a 4-2-3-1 with Robinson, Bassey, Diop, and Castagne along the backline. Palhinha and Lukic formed a double pivot with Pereira floating freely ahead of them. Wingers Willian and Iwobi supported Muniz up top. Marco Silva had plenty of options off the bench with Jimenez, Traore, Reid, and Harry Wilson all waiting for their names to be called.

Summary

From the start of the match, Fulham immediately lofted balls into the box and commonly won the second ball, but Brentford’s midfield helped clean this up as the match progressed.

Brentford created overloads on the wings and used Toney dropping to help progress the ball. The Bees man marking also helped create some chances by winning the ball high up the pitch. Brentford’s press forced Fulham into making some errant passes, but the Bees couldn’t take advantage of these sequences.

As much as Fulham typically record a high number of interceptions, Brentford actually ended with 16, which was the 3rd most interceptions in one of their Premier League matches so far this season.

Iwobi created 11 shot creating actions, leading Fulham in combined xG + xA. For Brentford, Reguilon ended with 4 shot creating actions, and finished with the most progressive passes. An encouraging statistic for Flekken was completing 15 of 20 long passes, his 2nd best passing performance of the season.

Hats off to Pinnock and Collins limiting Muniz to only winning 2 of 8 aerial duels. An impressive feat for how physical Muniz plays and how much Fulham target him.
