Brentford’s transfer deadline day felt more like a pantomime than a football negotiation – complete with the chorus of “oh yes he will, oh no he won’t” surrounding Yoane Wissa’s future. After days of speculation and a storm sparked by the forward’s Instagram statement, the deal finally closed with Newcastle United for a package of £55m, some £30m more than their first offer for the Bees’ striker. As one national outlet put it, “Brentford’s refusal to buckle early forced Newcastle to pay full price.”

For the Bees, it’s a bittersweet moment. Wissa himself posted: “Grateful for my time at Brentford, but excited for the next chapter. Newcastle felt right for me and my family.” The club, however, can point to the fact that Mbeumo and Wissa together have brought in nearly £130m in a matter of weeks – vindicating the policy of holding firm.

The question now is whether the squad is adequately equipped for the months ahead. The late arrival of Reiss Nelson, on loan from Arsenal, has provided a welcome boost. “I’m hungry to prove myself and bring energy to this team,” Nelson said after signing. Alongside £40m-plus signing Dango Ouattara, the Bees have injected pace and versatility, but there are doubts whether the firepower fully replaces what’s been lost. In fact we are sure it doesn’t, particularly in the short term.

Fabio Carvalho was offered a potential move to Lyon on a loan-to-buy deal, but Brentford turned that down – there’s still belief he can make an impact in red and white from the powers that be. Meanwhile, talk of Kristoffer Ajer leaving quietly faded – which is certainly a bullet dodged.

Ultimately, this has been a window of transition.. reactive, not proactive. No club can lose figures like Wissa and Mbeumo without disruption, but Brentford have once again shown their bottle and nous in the market. The big test is whether this reshaped squad can keep the Bees out of trouble until January at worst, and with a more positive outlook, turning the corner and pushing up the league.
