In the FanStand live from the pub YouTube debate between Brentford and Orient fans in the run up to the big match at the weekend, Orient fans pointed out that Brentford ALWAYS choke on the big occasion – hinting that there would be more of the same at the weekend.

Ex Brentford player Carl Hutchings then explained Brentford’s no-show at the 1997 Playoff Final vs Crewe – explaining Brentford didn’t choke that year but more to the point we just tactically annihalated. .

After dispatching Bristol City so magnificently in the semi-finals, Brentford were red hot favourites for the final after finishing in 4th place. They faced 6th place Crewe, with their side of young inexperienced 17 and 18 year olds, on a roasting hot day at Wembley expecting to lift the playoff trophy.

Hutchings was pretty much the only Brentford player that put in a shift that day as Brentford were simply not at the races – losing to a solitary goal to leave them to fight it out in Division 1 once again the next season.
