Brentford legend Marcus Gayle can look forward to a few hearty renditions of his massive song this Saturday when he returns to Griffin Park with his Skrill Conference South Staines Town in the FA Cup First Round.
It is games like this one that keep the magic of the Cup alive: two sides that usually play pre-season friendlies paired together for a juicy local tie, with a popular former player thrown into the mix for good measure.
Gayle, who after leaving Griffin Park, went on to play in the top flight with Wimbledon, and north of the border with Rangers, has likened Saturday’s clash with Brentford to the excitement surrounding a wedding … Speaking in his Zapsportz.com column Marcus said; “it’s like going to a wedding… what to wear, who’s coming…all the travel arrangements!”
Gayle, who insists his players have set their minds on an upset and are not turning up in TW8, all the way from TW18, just to fulfil a fixture added; “This weekend’s big FA Cup match will be an experience that they (the players) will always keep close to their heart. For the first time they won’t just be playing in front of hundreds of fans … but thousands.”
Some Bees fans see the arrival of the FA Cup as a distraction… I say it is part of our game’s amazing heritage and we should treasure matches like this one. Be there.
