Over the last 20 years, the North East has been a haven for quality beer – with countless micro breweries sprouting up throughout the region. Listed below are ten alternative independent pubs, which all serve great beer and listed in order from furthest away from the ground to nearest… Bars 1 through 12 make a tasty little pub crawl!

 

10 Left Luggage Room – Monkseaton Station

Housed in the old luggage room of the station. The outside drinking area outside is literally part of the platform for the Metro to St James Park.  So you can finish your pint as the train pulls in and hop straight onto the train.

 

9 Platform2  – Tynemouth Market

The Metro also passes through this station which also hosts a flea market on the weekend

 

8 Tyne Bank Brewery Tap – 375 Walker Rd  NE6 2AB (2.2 miles from the ground)

Spacious tap room for one of Newcastle’s newer micro breweries.

 

7 Free Trade Inn – 12 St Lawrence Rd NE6 1AP (1.8 miles)

Often voted the pub with the best view in England (see attached photo). Great selection of ales.

 

6 Brinkburn Brewery – 1A Ford Street NE6 1NW (1.7 miles)

Another Brewery Tap lots of ales all produced on premises. Good burgers

 

5 The Cumberland Arms  – James Pl St NE6 1LD (1.6 miles)

Friendly old style pub with cosy snug. Spacious outside area.

 

4 The Bridge Tavern – 7 Akenside Hill NE1 3UF (0.7 miles)

Just up from the Quayside underneath the Tyne Bridge does good food not to confused with The Bridge Hotel on The High Level Bridge above.

 

3 Crown Posada – 31 The Side NE1 3JE (0.7 miles)

2 The Split Chimp Arch – 7 Westgate Rd NE1 1SA  (0.6 miles)

Cheerful modern Micropub

 

1 Mean Eyed Cat – 1 St Thomas’ NE1 4LE  (0.5 miles)

Mexican themed bar with plenty of decent beer. Best bet for pub close to ground
