In the light of the furore caused by Norwich charging Brentford fans £35 and Leeds charging £34 to watch Championship football, Beesotted decided to run a quick poll to see what price fans thought was a fair price to watch football in this division.

The results were interesting with 38% of voters feeling £25 was a fair price point, 8% going along with the “Twenty’s Plenty” premise feeling £20 was a fair figure and 9% thinking admission should be less than £20.

Whether or not it is mere coincidence that £25 is the rough price Brentford charges ‘walk up fans’ (as opposed to the season ticket-holder match price which is around £15 cheapest) which has got our fans comfortable with the level … Or whether Brentford are tuned into exactly where fans are at with regards fair pricing, I can’t personally say.

Interestingly, 6% felt over £35 was a fair figure and 4% felt £35 was spot on. We suspect this was possibly a combination of a Norfolk contingent hammering away on their keyboards, people without kids, fans who only occasionally attend matches where spending £35 every three months or so is not so much of a hardship …  or completely minted folk who are non-plussed that swathes of their community are unable to attend matches on a regular basis due to being priced out.

Maybe some people have got used to this Premiership idea of ‘season ticket sharing’ where two or three fans get together to buy an extortionately priced season ticket then draw straws as to what matches they are going to go to between themselves – with football becoming more of a monthly or six weekly occurrence for them as opposed to bi-weekly (or weekly if you go home and away).

Interestingly, only 2% thought Brentford CEOs £30 upper cap was the most favourable price-point and we find it interesting that no-one went for a ticket price between £30 and £35 .. but 10% were happy to pay £35 and over.

What does that tell us?

Football fans are realistic. Naturally we would all love to pay £10 to watch out team play every week but it’s not going to happen.

The fact that they have come up with a mean figure of £25 in and amongst the “Twenty’s Plenty” campaign speaks buckets and shows how certain clubs are very much out of tune (or don’t care) what their fans think.

Additionally, around 70% of fans polled feel a price somewhere between £20 and £25 is fair.

Interestingly for prices above £25, £27 was the favoured figure with 4% favouring that price point. This was the price Wolves charged Brentford fans and I know quite a few supporters thought this was the upper end of what they felt was an acceptable figure.

Now that we have a gauge on what folk feel is a FAIR price to in the Championship, we thought it would be interesting to see what fans feel would be fair IF Brentford got promoted to the Premier League (and this is strictly hypothetical .. so please don’t get knickers in ye olde twist … the club have had to submit recommendations by the end of January for what would happen IF Brentford were to get to the Premier League .. no doubt ticketing will have been part of the discussion)  … with one of two hypothetical scenarios being considered

1) They were granted a stay of execution to stay at Griffin Park .. bearing in mid the ground would be full every week with a maximum capacity of 12,000 or less (this again is hypothetical so please don’t get yer knickers in a twist on and start writing long paragraphs on the sub laws of the Premier League’s stadium regulations)

2) We moved to another stadium with a capacity of 20,000 or above.

Please take 2 minutes to fill in this really quick survey.

Cheers
