Brentford FC have today appointed David Weir as assistant manager to Mark Warburton.
Beesotted believes that Weir first came onto the radar of the Brentford hierarchy as a talented young coach around the period that Uwe Rosler was named as manager.
Weir made his name in the game as a centre back for Falkirk, Hearts, Everton and Rangers, winning 69 international caps along the way. After retiring as a player he returned to Everton as a coach for their Academy and reserve teams in February 2012. He subsequently had an ill-fated spell as manager of Sheffield United earlier this season.
Brentford had also today announced that Alan Kernaghan (assistant manager) and Peter Farrell (first team coach) had left Griffin Park – it is unclear yet as to whether either will link up with former boss Uwe Rosler at Wigan Athletic.
The Bees last week appointed former Liverpool academy boss Frank McParland as director of football to work alongside Mark Warburton – McParland was formely chief scout for the Anfield side.
This flurry of activity suggests that January may yet become an interesting transfer window – it’s highly likely that Warburton has already identified a couple of players to strengthen the squad whilst Weir and McParland may have their own relationships that could help attract young talent to TW8.
It’s also possible that a couple of enquiries will be received for some of Brentford’s own talented players – although with the club pushing for promotion it’s unlikely that anyone will be allowed to leave unless the price is right.
