So far this season I’ve been very proud to be a Brentford supporter.
One dodgy half at Middlesborough aside, we’ve more or less matched or surpassed every team we have played and in reality absolutely battered Leeds last Saturday
However I’ve left a number of games so far thinking “what if”.
Admittedly some of the “what if’s” relate to a growing amount of refereeing decisions that have scuppered us – Watford’s opener last night was a soft penalty and please don’t get me started on the penalties not awarded to us in other recent games for blatant hacks on Bidwell (Birmingham) and Pritchard (Norwich).
Watford’s winner last night was an absolutely brilliant strike from Vydra – a goal that deserved to win a game – and Norwich’s Cameron Jerome also scored a worldy at Griffin Park. There are fine margins in this division and these high pedigree players really do seem to make a difference.
I don’t expect us to have the budget or reputation just yet to go out and sign a Vydra or a Jerome, but I do think we can produce a better end product with the resources already at our disposal.
Against Leeds on Saturday we spurned six or seven very good chances. Last night I can think of four similar opportunities to score – not half chances, but good chances. The type of opportunities that other teams are taking advantage of.
I don’t think we lack the quality or ability to take these chances. I think we are lacking the composure and the self belief. We’ve seen that we are ready for the Championship, now let’s behave that way.
As one of the Beesotted tweeters I’m quite happy to forgo a few “oooooh”s for the chance to announce another superbly worked goal for The Bees. Or even a few scrappy ones.
Let’s build on our hard work and swift approach play and start to punish teams.
