Brentford fought back majestically at a freezing Griffin Park on Tuesday night to show their promotion credentials against rivals Swindon.
In truth Brentford were poor for the first hour of the game whilst the visitors looked lively and competitive.
Swindon took the lead around the half hour mark when Harlee Dean was caught in possession by Gary Roberts who set up Simon Ferry to fire home
Dean hasn’t been quite the same since his partnership with Tony Craig was split up and – as his head started to drop – he misjudged a ball with Andy Williams hitting the post on the resultant chance.
His team-mates were quick to support him and on the stroke of half time he made a vital goal line clearance.
Brentford hit back on the hour mark when a delightful pass from substitute Wright-Phillips saw Donaldson break free, only to be hauled down by keeper Foderingham.
Rubbish ref Stuart Atwell – poor throughout the evening – only showed a yellow card but sub Sam Saunders punished Swindon by whalloping home the spot kick.
The visitors looked shocked by Brentford drawing level and immediately marauded forward but Brentford cleared their lines.
Sam Saunders then injected some belief into The Bees when his free kick rattled the cross bar and shortly after Donaldson sealed the three points with a sizzler on the turn. Cue pandemonium.
The Bees could have added to their tally with BWP and Donaldson denied by Foderingham but the 2-1 win gives them three points and moves them back up to third.
In all honesty the first hour of football was a bit depressing – no belief and little possession – and Clayton Donaldson’s glaring miss summed up our luck in front of goal recently, but the last half hour can hopefully reignite our promotion push.
Brentford look so much better when they attack teams – it’s clear that there are no outstanding teams in this division so why not let opponents worry about us.
The central defensive triangle of Dean and the Moores remains potentially fragile – Tony Craig was a rare calm head in the first half tonight but tucked away at left back could have little influence. Let’s hope Uwe addresses this soon or that the centre back pairing start learning from their mistakes.
We’ve got PNE at home on Saturday – let’s hope we aggressively seize the three points on offer. This win also shouldn’t mask over some clear weaknesses that still need addressing.
