News stories over the last few days have concentrated on some of Brentford’s fringe players being linked with other clubs.

Will Grigg (will the last striker at Griffin Park please turn out the light on the way out) has been touted to join Bristol City whilst Coventry are apparently tracking Toumani Diagouraga.

Both players have previously proved their worth in League One but I’d question whether either will be able to step up to the Championship – possibly a view shared by our current management.

With Clayton Donaldson also set to depart to Birmingham, this surely means that we can expect an influx of players to Griffin Park in the near future – with the likes of Luke Ayling (Yeovil), Conor McAleny (Everton) and Callum Wilson (Coventry) apparently on Mark Warburton’s shopping list.

It’s also expected that the Brentford management will use their combined knowledge and relationships related to youth football to bring an influx of young talent to the club, following on the heels of Jake Bidwell, James Tarkowski and Adam Forshaw. Warburton made contacts around Europe through the Next Gen tournament whilst Frank McParland and David Weir hold influence with some top tier English clubs.

One player who seems to fit into this bracket is George Cole of Chelsea – the attacking starlet has had injury problems over recent times but is regarded as a potential jem of the future – one that could possibly be polished at Griffin Park.

It’s also possible that we will return to League One to pick the pockets of our failed promotion rivals – Leyton’s Romain Vincelot is apparently wanted by both Brighton and Brentford, whilst Dean Cox and Moses Odubajo probably have the attacking credentials to flourish at a higher level.

The next few weeks will certainly prove crucial in shaping our squad for next season – as supporters we need to be patient and trust Messrs Benham and Warburton to get things right, as part of our long term plan for sustainable success.
