Brentford fans will be waking up this morning pinching themselves and able to enjoy a few more hours as the centre of the footballing world. The Bees’ fully deserved win over Arsenal is, rightly, receiving wall-to-wall press coverage and Sky Sports News is on a Brentford goal loop as our team sit atop the Premier League. The Bees have well and truly arrived in the top flight.
Although most savvy Bees fans believed in their side’s chances last night, and will continue to do so throughout what will be a rollercoaster of a season, witnessing the victory over Mikel Atreta’s Gunners was surreal. We’ve all waited generations for this level of euphoria and achievement.
The new Brentford stadium was a cauldron from start to finish, packed with excited Brentford fans who sang their hearts out and urged their side forwards – and boy did the team respond. But this was not a plucky, against the run of play, cup upset – Brentford weathered the early pressure before going on to boss the game for large periods, which earned an unforgettable three points.
Sergi Canos’ and Christian Norgaard’s names will be forever linked with their side’s first Premiership win for their goalscoring exploits, but it was a true team performance in every sense. The Bees team won battles all over the pitch and every single player in red and white rose to the occasion. Pontus at the back, organising and encouraging. Janelt for his steel. Onyeka, Toney and Pinnock for winning the aerial duels and tackling hard. David Raya for a critical save late on. Bryan Mbeumo, Rico Henry and Kristoffer Ajer can take a bow too. And let’s not forget Thomas Frank, his tactic were spot on and his humble, honest and happy words after the game help frame the evening perfectly.
Getting off to a positive start, whoever the opposition, was going to be critical, however, we couldn’t have wished for a better start. The Brentford faithful witnessed unbelievable scenes, and the celebrations back in the pub were truly special. Brentford fans full of pride having watched their team living out the stuff of dreams.
