Yesterday saw Lee Carsley’s first game in charge at Griffin Park. It was hoped that this could be the turning point and kick-start our season, but instead, a disappointing attacking threat and defensive errors lead to yet another game without securing all three points.
Alan MacCormack replaced Josh Clark in the defence, Jack O’Connell came in for the suspended Tarki and Ryan Woods got his first start in the centre.
It was a decent first half performance by Brentford, but they failed to get ahead, but there was certainly hope from the fans at half time that chances could be created and that possession would eventually pay off.
Stand out performers were from David Button who stopped a David Cotterill header that looked to be heading straight into the back of the net. Ryan Woods also demonstrated what he has to offer the team this season floating around in and always available.
Brentford’s best chance of the game came when Vibe looked certain to score in the second half, but he could only fire the ball straight at the keeper.
Once again Brentford’s poor aerial defending from corners resulted in Birmingham opening the scoring with just under 20 minutes to go.
Canos appeared as a second half substitution, but was largely controlled by the Birmingham defence and midfield, he failed to produce the same spark as he did on his home debut.
In fact City seemed wise to the threat and defended well – the flowing football seemed to stop and a comeback looked less and less likely
Gogia came on too late for him to have a real impact on the result, although he did have one shot when it would have been better to have crossed into the area.
As always, Brentford pressed for the equaliser with successive corners in injury time, but a Clayton Donaldson goal in the dying seconds of the game marked a disappointing start to Lee Carsley’s reign as Brentford’s head coach.
The new coach’s comments in the post-match conference overshadowed the defeat unfortunately.
