The trip down to Bournemouth for the Carabao Cup could’ve gone either way. With so many changes to the line-up, I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But what we got was a proper Brentford performance – full of fight, energy, and a couple of quality finishes that sent us home delighted.

Bournemouth were bright to start and had several shots at goal, but Hákon Valdimarsson was more than up to them. He was brilliant all night – safe hands, smart saves, and just looked in control. It gave everyone in the away end real confidence that we weren’t going to be rolled over and Brenrford grew and grew as the match progressed.

The first real cheer came when Fábio Carvalho finally found the net. He’d already gone close once with a cheeky effort that should have been on target, but when the ball broke in the box from Ajer’s great header, he made no mistake and tucked it away. It was no more than he deserved – he looked sharp every time he got on the ball.

Bournemouth kept pushing, and we had to dig in a few times, but that’s when you saw how well this squad is knitted together. Blocks, tackles, last-ditch clearances – the lot. And then came the killer blow: Frank Onyeka won it high up, Carvalho tried to work it, and the loose ball fell to Igor Thiago who slotted home coolly. Cue absolute scenes in the away end and brilliant celebrations from the players right next to the away section.

From there it was about staying strong, which the lads did brilliantly. A red card for them late on killed any hope of a comeback, and we saw it out in style. What stood out most though was the clear unity in this group and the buy-in to our new head coach’s approach. Everyone looks committed and together, which bodes well for what’s ahead. But, for me, seeing some of the ‘below-par’ Bees putting in a real shift added the cherry on the top of a very positive night.

Nights like that make the journey back up to London absolutely worth it – and it gives us another lift going into the Premier League trip to Sunderland at the weekend.
