Brentford will be kicking themselves that one defensive lapse cost them victory over Leeds United last night on a squally wet night under the Griffin Park floodlights.

It’s was another pretty solid all round display by Brentford over all, especially by the back four and in midfield where McEachran, Swift and Woods all combined well, and at the back, Dean and Barbet put in a real shift against a very physical Leeds front line.

But for all their possession and intricate approach play the home side came up against a wall of yellow, or were simply too hesitant to shoot  – although pulling the trigger did pay off for Sam Saunders on 27 minutes, when he broke from the half way line before finding the bottom corner with the keeper well beaten.

Leeds looked dangerous on the break and David Button had to produce a couple of impressive saves, with the referee also waving away a penalty appeal, but with their noses in front, the Bees faithful were hoping their team would hold out for the win.

It was hoped the introduction of Djuracin and Gogia would give us an injection of energy up top as legs tired, but neither seemed to have an impact on the game and, for the last 20 minutes, possession was given away too easily.

Leeds grabbed their point thanks to a quality strike from Carayol in 84th minute, but Jake Bidwell will know that he really should have found row z rather than an opponent when clearing, and the Bees paid a heavy price for a momentary lapse.

Over all the match pinpoints exactly where the team and squad are at… There is genuine quality and big potential all over the pitch, but we are light up top and the defence is prone to lapses… The midfield, without Toums (who received a far warmer reception that Stuart Dallas on their returns to GP) did very well, but I’m sure the club are looking at options to bring in a bit more physicality in the middle… Whether that’s before the end of the January window, on loan, or during the close season, we will find out. Almost but not quite Bees.

But as you will hear from listening to the Beesotted Pride of West London post-match Podcast and watching the Beesotted Terrace Video (links above) it was felt Brentford were the better team and this was two points dropped on the night… almost but not quite Brentford.
