Brentford got out of jail big time against a spirited Millwall side at Griffin Park on Saturday.
Two-Nil down with just six minutes left on the clock, the Reds were staring down the barrel of defeat to dent the playoff push, yet somehow, a valuable point was grabbed, quite how remains somewhat of a mystery.
The Bees started brightly enough but it soon became clear that the Lions hadn’t headed across town to roll over, Neil Harris has pumped a lot of spirit and organisation into his side, and had they won, few Bees fans would have claimed it hadn’t been deserved.
Brentford looked tired and struggled to emulate their usual high tempo, and instead of building upon Tuesday’s win at Ewood Park, they looked sluggish and weary… And once again the long ball over the top did the damage to put us one down.
Millwall’s lead was doubled after Harlee Dean went walkabout but lost the ball… Millwall capitalising on the error to break quickly and float a great ball to the back post where Aiden O’Brien stretched to head home.
Desperate times call for desperate measures and Mark Warburton decided to go three at the back, Dean coming off for Jon Toral and Toumani making way for Alan Judge, but based on the previous 80 minutes’ evidence, nobody inside the ground would have forecast a share of the points were possible. But then a minor miracle happened.
Jota and Judge combined well inside the box to drawn a foul, Alex Pritchard smashing the resulting spot kick down the middle… Then, with four minutes injury time having been signalled, Millwall’s belief seemed to evaporate as the Bees came at them in waves… Griffin Park erupted when Moses Odubajo smashed home a half cleared shot…. Amazing. There was even time to consider a winner and both sides went close at the death.
Before the game a single point would have seemed massively disappointing… But it was a sense of relief that Brentford fans left the stadium feeling… I still don’t quite know how we managed that escape act.
