Spread the love

Something happened to me just after Bradley Wright-Phillips’ amazing equaliser at Bramall Lane on Tuesday night that summed up my own feelings so exactly, that it was almost uncanny.

With adrenaline coursing through my veins and with a sense of euphoria that no drug could possibly induce, I dangled my phone in front of another jubilant Bee and asked his thoughts… “This has been the best season ever, from Germany until now, every game home and away has been mental…” And it has been. That may be paraphrasing him ever so slightly, but everyone behind the goal was clearly bursting with pride for Uwe and his team. Relieved, yes. Pumped up and potty for it, yes. Embarrassed for hugging that strange man behind me, definitely. But proud of the best side in the division, without a doubt.

I’ll level with you here… Most of me wants this season to end so desperately now, it’s been totally all consuming… I yearn for my Greek beach and to be able to focus on other things, for God’s sake I’ve got some exciting business developments to be getting on with… but one part of me is dreading the nothingness that the close season, and failure in particular, could bring.

I’ve been here before, I’ve witnessed the ‘snatched from the jaws of victory’ twice too often, I should be older and wiser after 35 years following the Bees… But it’s seasons like this that make it all worthwhile, surrounded by people who are feeling exactly the same as me.

So, no matter what happens for the remainder of the season, before promotion, or play-off hell, or anger from those who feel that way inclined ruins everything… I want to say this now…

Thank you Uwe for what you’ve done for our club this season, thank you to every single player for wanting it as much as the fans do, thank you Mathew Benham for ensuring we are competing for a place in the Championship and not in the Blue Square… and thank you to the Bees hardcore for the amazing atmospheres you’ve helped create and have allowed me to share in all over the land.

What a season… What a bloody season… No matter how it ends, remember that.
