Brentford have smashed their transfer record to sign highly-rated Malian midfielder Mamadou Sangaré from Lens – but what can Bees fans expect from their new £35 million (€41 million) signing?

Mamadou Sangaré needed just one season at Lens to earn a high-profile move to the Premier League.
The Malian midfielder joined the French club last summer from Rapid Wien, where he had helped the Austrian side reach the UEFA Conference League quarter-finals. During his only campaign at Lens, Sangaré established himself as one of Ligue 1’s standout midfielders under Pierre Sage, playing a crucial role in the club’s Coupe de France triumph and their second-place finish.
Brentford paid a club-record fee of around €41 million to bring the Mali international to west London, underlining just how highly the club rate the 22-year-old after an outstanding campaign in France.
During the 2025/26 season, Sangaré missed only four matches – one through a minor injury, one due to suspension for an accumulation of yellow cards, and two while representing Mali at the Africa Cup of Nations. His consistency and importance to the team were reflected in his playing time, as he finished the campaign as Lens’ sixth-most used player.

The Malian international enjoyed an outstanding spell at the French club, where he quickly became one of the league’s most influential new arrivals. His arrival represented a huge upgrade in midfield and ensured that the departures of Neil El Aynaoui and Habib Diouf were barely noticed.
Sangaré stood out above all for his extraordinary physical profile. He covered huge amounts of ground, dominated duels and used his long legs to win possession repeatedly. His athleticism allowed him to recover countless loose balls and make interceptions all over the pitch, earning him the reputation of being an “octopus” in midfield. During the 2025/26 Ligue 1 campaign, he reached 200 ball recoveries after just 29 league matches, underlining his immense defensive impact.
Despite his physical dominance, Sangaré was equally impressive on the ball. He played with great dynamism, regularly driving forward through midfield before releasing the ball after only a few touches. His ability to carry possession through pressure and progress attacks became one of his defining qualities. He never looked uncomfortable when pressed, instead remaining calm and using his technique to escape difficult situations.
His technical quality also enabled him to make a decisive contribution in the final third. He produced moments of creativity, such as an outside-of-the-foot assist against Marseille, while also demonstrating his striking ability with a superb volley from the edge of the box against Strasbourg. In another outstanding performance against Paris Saint-Germain, he created three chances while recovering 13 balls, perfectly illustrating his ability to influence matches at both ends of the pitch.
Sangaré consistently delivered commanding performances against some of the strongest teams in France, including Paris Saint-Germain, Marseille, Strasbourg, Angers and Le Havre. His combination of physical power, technical ability, composure under pressure and ball-carrying made him one of the most complete midfielders in Ligue 1. It was no surprise that he was widely regarded as one of the league’s standout performers during the 2025/26 campaign.
Signed by Lens for around €8 million, Sangaré rapidly increased his value thanks to a series of outstanding performances. His level throughout the season suggested it would be difficult for Lens to keep hold of him, and his eventual move to Brentford reflected just how quickly his reputation had grown.

How can he fit into Keith Andrews’ squad?
It would come as a major surprise if Mamadou Sangaré did not become a key player for Brentford. Not only does he possess the qualities to thrive in the Premier League, but the club’s substantial investment also reflects the importance they expect him to have within Keith Andrews’ plans.
Jordan Henderson having departed has left Vitaly Janelt as Brentford’s only natural defensive midfielder, increasing the need for reinforcement after his injury problems last season. Sangaré adds depth and competition in the number six role, with his athleticism and ball-winning ability expected to free Brentford’s more creative midfielders.
Many Brentford supporters are particularly excited by the prospect of a partnership with Yehor Yarmoliuk, whose box-to-box qualities should complement Sangaré’s defensive strengths and help unlock the best of Mikkel Damsgaard further forward. His presence could also allow Mathias Jensen greater licence to dictate play from deeper areas, using his passing range and creativity while Sangaré provides defensive security behind him.

Could Brentford Have Another Star On Their Hands?
The general perception among those who have watched Mamadou Sangaré closely this season is that he has the quality to compete at the highest level. There is also a growing belief that the €41 million Brentford paid to Lens could prove to be a bargain, considering Sangaré’s potential, the current transfer market and the level he displayed throughout the 2025/26 season.
The challenge now is to see whether he can reproduce that level in the Premier League. If he does, Brentford may well have secured one of the division’s outstanding midfielders and one of the signings of the summer.
Brentford have built a reputation for identifying elite talent before many of Europe’s biggest clubs. Bryan Mbeumo arrived in west London for around €6 million before developing into one of the Premier League’s outstanding forwards and eventually earning a move for many times that fee.
