Former Brentford defender James Tarkowski’s call-up to the England squad for the forthcoming friendlies against Holland and Italy will be news to Brentford’s ears… for no other reason than it will earn our club a tasty financial windfall of around £500,000 – a figure that will double if he is selected for a fully competitive international for the Three Lions.
Unfortunately there will be no similar payment for Alfie Mawson who became the second ex-Bee to get a phone call from Gareth Southgate today.
Despite the manner of Tarki’s departure leaving a sour taste with Brentford fans – you will of course remember the ‘strike’ incident before the televised match with Burnley a couple of seasons ago – an extra payment on top of the £3m original fee will be gladly received, with the prospect of further significant payments to follow as and when he inevitably moves on from Turf Moor.
Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United have already been sniffing round and his growing reputation suggests it’s only a matter of time before one of the big clubs pounce with the Bees set to pocket a significant chunk of any sell on fee.
Congratulations to both players.
