Resurgent Brentford made it three wins on the spin and continued the unbeaten run to nine matches under the Griffin Park floodlights on Saturday evening, with the live Sky audience witnessing a thoroughly deserved three points against Leeds United.
Brentford started the brighter of the two side, with Andy Lonergan in the Leeds goal starting the evening in solid form… that was all about to change thanks to a real clanger where he dropped a cross right in front of Neil Maupay who couldn’t miss from six yards.
Brentford’s impressive attacking play should have been rewarded with a larger margin at the interval, but the unfortunate Ollie Watkins saw his spot kick, awarded for a late lunge on Maupay, blaze over the cross bar – a very different outcome to the spot kick at St Andrews in midweek.
The second half was more of an even affair, with Leeds’ substations giving them more of an edge, and on the balance of play the eventual equalizer was certainly not against the run of play – Daniel Bentley will be kicking himself though – with the Bees’ stopper repeating an almost identical fluff to Lonergan which allowed Ezgjan Alioski to head home over two defenders.
At that stage the game could have gone wither way, but with Ryan Woods bossing the show and pulling all the strings in midfield, and with Mokotjo coming on to replace Sawyers, Brentford stepped up a gear – having rattled the Ealing Road cross bar twice in fairly short succession through Yenaris and Watkins – the game was secured thanks to two late goals.
First Barbet smashed a free kick under the flailing keeper after Jozefzoon was felled outside the area, then the icing on the cake was provided by man-of-the-match Woods who side-footed home from just outside the box after being picked out brilliantly… game set and match tin pot Brentford!
As you will hear from the post-match Beesotted Pride of West London Podcast, there were some delighted Bees and less than happy Leeds fans who commented on the game after the final whistle… but nobody could deny that the better team won and, with The Bees now just three points outside the play-off places, the good performances we’ve witnessed all season are being matched with cracking results too.
Brentford can now look forward to unwinding after an amazing couple of week’s hard graft and will be relishing the chance to go to Cardiff in a fortnight and continue the march up the division.
