Another typically accurate and succinct summary by Jim. The vision of Benham, plus somehow his ability to attract an outstanding group of people to implement what is in effect a revolutionary but very simple strategy, beyond the thought process of all others in football, really is a game changer. No doubt there will be more defectors from the playing group in the future leaving for the cash and the spin of ‘bigger’ teams, most of which is illusionary. Whenever a player decides to quit Brentford then almost without exception an apparently irreplaceable player is replaced by a much better player, usually at less than a quarter of the cost, plus as Jim pointed out the ‘B’ team is developing apace which will only add to the depth of talent available.
What is also mandatory is that with so much talent being developed at Brentford, there will be departures every year both to balance the books and to make sure cream continues to rise. The challenge for the future will be to retain as much of the cream as possible, become consistently profitable and continue to attract the most outstanding young future stars to be a part of ‘little tinpot’ Brentford causing havoc in the Premier League and Europe – and in the process offend all and sundry that such an unfashionable outfit can achieve so much. If only my dear old Dad was still around for him to see his beloved Brentford achieve what he always believed was possible.
Nice article Jim. I agree with what you’re saying, unfortunately it’s the draw of the 30, 40, 60k a week contracts that are enough to entice our players away; I wouldn’t blame them..however they run the risk of being washed up in 1 or 2 years later as a number of our ex players would confirm. There is a uniqueness about our play and setup which brings the best out of our players; the sum greater than the parts maybe? or perhaps just that the style of football suits their abilities. Try telling a 23 year old who’s being offered 40k a week to go to another club and sit on the bench when they’re currently on 5 times less that actually you might be better served staying and being the first name on a team sheet for 10 – 15 years of your professional life and being worshipped by fans who appreciate you, than earning a fortunate briefly before things rapidly turning sour and destroying your reputation and having to drop down the football pyramid.
You really should reel yourselves in. This club, on the up obviously, needs to be below the radar blip.
Too late for that Chris brace yourself for the January window mate , i bet the club already have replacements penciled in though now that we are at” LONG LAST” a well run football club.
