After being challenged to partake in the ALS Ice Bucket challenge yesterday by Bees fan and Beesotted contributor, Dan Suh, I’ve manfully (ehem) accepted and braved the rain in the garden to have an icy bucket of water tipped over my noggin to support the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
My nominations are Jon Restall (@Condorman) and two friends who have just become fathers for the first time, James McGeoghan (@jimmymack84) and Rob Staggs – I’ve not been able to arrange to wet their baby’s heads as yet, so I’ll wet their’s instead!
Beesotted’s Billy the Bee was nominated by Bees blogger Nick Bruzon yesterday… so watch this space…. Although I believe others nominated by Bruzon have been involved in a less than charitable chickening out moment of misery.

We’ll done. This is a great cause and it’s brilliant to see people raising money for sufferers of an awful disease that can affect anyone. There was even a study in the last decade that suggested professional footballers were more at risk than average. As well as making money (you can donate here http://www.justgiving.com/icebucket4MND) anyone taking part in the challenge has hopefully now also raised awareness of Motor Neurone Disease.
Yes, sadly there is a shortage of clean water in the world. To try and belittle the millions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of pounds that have been donated for sufferers of this ALS/MND by suggesting these challenges are a waste of water is rather short sighted in my humble opinion. The number of people implying so on social media is beginning to get on my nerves. I just hope they are always diligent about their own domestic use of water.
Again, well done to anyone who has taken part so far and good luck to Billy the Bee, Condorman and Dave’s other nominees.

Something else to think of if you happen to consider this is a “waste of water”.
There’s a generation of us who were introduced to Brentford in the late 1970s. Players like Len Bond in goal, lil Steve Phillips with his gold t-shirt underneath those red and white Bukta stripes, Doug Allder and his spat with Speight in that great floodlit battle with the Blades, and Jim ‘remember me for my thunderous shot rather than getting bitten by a dog for Torquay’ McNichol.
Another player who was part of that team, was Paul Shrubb, a Kevin O’Connor of the time. A versatile defensive player who always gave 100% but had more to his game than just one who tried hard? I recall him being in the side for most of the 1979/80 games that made me fall in love with the Bees. He also remained at the club throughout the first adidas season of 80/81 before finally moving to Aldershot where he became a much loved hero.
Paul Shrubb was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in January 2006. He was always a battler on the pitch and has subsequently battled this awful disease for over eight years. If you are still unaware of what Motor Neurone Disease brings its sufferers, please visit http://www.mndassociation.org.
Again, it is sad there is a lack of clean water in the world. However, the buckets being thrown over participants in this ‘challenge’ have already raised £1.2million for the above charity. If someone like Paul Shrubb, one of my first ever footballing heroes, can develop MND then anyone can.
I am proud my teenage daughter accepted this challenge from a school mate and immediately nominated me. We have used four buckets of ice and water but raised money and awareness for this charity. Please don’t see this as a waste of water.
