The Bees and the Blades locked horns at Bramall Lane. The Blades – fair play to them – restricted the Bees’ game, fought for every ball and ran out 1-0 winners.

Brentford missed gilt edge chance to at least have had a share of the spoils.

We spoke to Bees n Blades fans post-match in the pub.

The Bee Job Question

The Bee Job Question

Three weeks ago I had a job interview. An interview for a job I was actually quite interested in, rather than just being a way out of the harrowingly dull, underachieving job I have at the moment. I have by me now the letter that arrived today, which will tell me...

The Great Brentford Song Scam

The Great Brentford Song Scam

For years Brentford fans have constantly been evolving the songs they employ to support their team. Scientists and historians, such as myself, rarely take an interest in such forms of tribal worship. But, after being approached by Beesotted to take a closer look at...

I was in the Navy during the War serving on H.M.S. Cairo (pictured above) when in 1942, Brentford played Portsmouth at Wembley, in the war-time F.A. Cup Final. I couldn’t attend as I was stationed in the Mediterranean around Gibraltar but my father went to the game...

The impressive pre season results, should have translated into a reassuring and good first League outing. However, I predicted a Blades win, because they are a team with cohesion , impetus from their promotion and guts and would be better prepared as a unit , for this first game. The Blades Manager, is passionate and a fighter and the team picks up and are inspired by that; Smith is too uninspiring, weary willy, looks a bit clueless, when the expected performance doesn’t transpire on the pitch and then doesn’t know how to light a fire under the team, in my view.
I feel that the new signings, cannot be judged too harshly, as they need time to bed in, but Smith and co, had better instil killer striker instinct up front and sort out the continued weakness in defence. I think there has been an over recruitment of foreign players, which means a big ask in getting them up and running for English football and will they prove to be any good?
The fade in , fade out performance of the team , needs to be addressed; the Blades fought every step of the way and that’s what is needed with the Bees.
The Forest game, will be a litmus test, of whether Bentham made a big blunder, in falling out with Mark. I think Mr W, will be doing all in his power to embarrass his ungrateful former employe, in the context of struggling with difficult early days , in his job at Forest. I don’t think Smith has the ruthless streak , or abilities, needed to fire up a promotion season.

This review seems a bit harsh to me. I do agree that Sheffield United were very much up for this match, but Brentford created several good chances and should certainly have at least scored a goal. The Bees seemed to be playing some lovely football, though the fact they did this and yet still failed to score is not good. Losing the first game is certainly nothing to be overly concerned about except for one thing, where, regretfully I do agree with Boru. The defence last season was far from our best feature and I do worry that we have failed to improve in this area sufficiently. There were some dreadful errors last year and whilst perfection is never going to be achieved, it is concerning to see a wobbly defence first time out.

I see on the BBC website that this season marks the 25th anniversary of the premier league. It was won by Man Utd whose first game resulted in a loss at Sheffield Utd. Just saying !!!
