Brentford produced another stunning first half performance on Tuesday night which had the home fans purring – some of the slick, passing football was out of the top drawer and, if you weren’t aware of the league positions of the respective teams before kick-off, anyone would have thought it was Brentford pushing for promotion.
Leeds started fairly brightly, but the Bees were soon in charge. Ryan Woods had a fantastic game in midfield, Harlee Dean was outstanding and the attacking prowess of Vibe, Canos and Jota cause no end of problems to United.
The opening goal came on 19 minutes following great build up play – Romain Sawyers lashing home from the right hand side of the Brook Road penalty area after Robert Green had pushed out a Canos shot… As you’ll see from the video clip above, Griffin Park went potty.
Most fans thought we’d doubled the lead when Lasse Vibe dinked the ball over Green after being played through, unfortunately the Dane’s attempt just went wide… However, Vibe made amends minutes later and the home fans were celebrating again when another parried shot was converted to the dismay of the travelling support.
In truth, the Bees could have been out of sight at the break, with Canos and Jota both going close again, and despite a brighter second half display by Leeds, Brentford always looked dangerous on the break – Jozefzoon almost converting from a Vibe saved shot and Jota seeing a wicked free kick almost find the net.
Leeds had their chances too as they battled to avert a second defeat on the spin, but there were few complains from the United manager, Garry Monk, after the match when he said; “Credit to them and how they played because they deserved the win. I’ve watched a lot of Brentford this season and that’s one of the best first-half displays I’ve seen from them.”
The fans were equally as glowing after the match as you will hear on the Beesotted Pride of West London Podcast (click link), and back in the boozer, there was a real sense of pride and achievement – Brentford are clearly growing in confidence and stature, and with more consistency and a handful of additions to the squad, it will be us challenging for the play-offs in twelve months time.
